Steven Morrison must pay 900 for punching a man outside a nightclub in his hometown of Dundee
The View's drummer has been fined 900 after being found guilty of assault. Last October, Steven Morrison punched a man outside a club in his hometown of Dundee.
"This was a nasty assault," said sheriff Elizabeth Munro. On 25 October, Morrison attacked Craig Cairnie on the street outside Fat Sam's nightclub. Together with co-accused Bryan Murphy, Morrison punched Cairnie repeatedly on his head and body, knocking him to the ground. The victim was later treated in hospital for cuts to his head, lip and ear.
The fight was allegedly about one of Cairnie's ex-girlfriends, the Daily Record reports. "I was told drink was taken by all involved but that is not an excuse at all," sheriff Munro told the court. "This almost casual violence is far too prevalent in this city." Though Morrison's solicitor, Gary McIlravey, said his client was "appalled" by the incident, with only "blurred" memories of the event, Munro told Morrison he had a "nasty streak", fining him 900.
Earlier in the proceedings, the sheriff had questioned the drummer's claim that he only earns 1,200 per month from his work with the View. "I find it difficult to believe," she said. But though their 2007 album, Hats Off to the Buskers, topped the charts, the 2009 follow-up quickly plummeted from the top 40. The band's new album, Bread and Circuses, was released on 14 March; it debuted at No 14.
"I'm in no way happy with what I've done," Morrison said upon leaving the court. "This is what you get if you behave badly ... I hope [it] doesn't reflect badly in any way with fans of the View."
The band begin their new tour in Inverness on Sunday.
