New Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos unearthed, and how to enable channel switching

Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos
Later today, Firefox will undergo its biggest developmental upheaval ever. Mozilla-central, the source of nightly builds, will be renumbered to version 5 -- and at long last, after years of wallowing around version 1, Mozilla's rendering and layout engine, Gecko, will also have its version number updated to match Firefox.

Shortly thereafter, Firefox's new channel system will be implemented. Firefox 5a2 will be introduced as the first Aurora build, and we should also see a Firefox 6 Nightly build. While we we're not sure where they came from, one Sören Hentzschel seems to have unearthed the new Nightly and Aurora logos (see above), along with new About Firefox dialogs (after the break).

In other news, if you want to take a sneak peek at the new 'channel changing' technology that will be introduced in upcoming Firefox builds, head to about:config and create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel -- the value doesn't matter. Then open Help > About Firefox and you'll be able to switch channel, but it doesn't do anything just yet (image after the break). Here's hoping that Firefox channel switching is smoother than Chrome.

Microsoft Office 2011 SP1 for Mac arriving next week with Outlook improvements

Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac SP1
Microsoft's Business Unit, the Mac software arm of the Redmond-based software giant, is set to release its first Service Pack for Office 2011 for Mac. Just like most updates of this nature, SP1 will address a myriad of bugs, and roll in most of the hotfixes that came before it into one, easy to install package.

SP1 will also address Outlook's syncing support, with the BU adding calendar support for Sync Services allowing you to finally sync Outlook calendars with iCal and other local calendars, as well as syncing iDevices hooked up through iTunes. For Office 2008 upgraders, this was one of the features removed in the Entourage to Outlook switch, so it's nice to see it finally make an appearance in Outlook. The irony here is that Outlook will no longer be able to sync with your MobileMe calendar when it's upgraded to the new version on the 5th of May, or before if you've jumped the gun early, as Apple has removed Sync Services support from MobileMe by turning to CalDAV. Nothing to do with Microsoft here of course, and it shouldn't be long before something gets worked out.

Outlook has also been bestowed with the ability to edit server-side Exchange rules, something our friends at TUAW pointed out, have been missing on the Mac since Office 2001 for Mac OS 9. The email Redirect and Resend buttons have also made an appearance, allowing you to send mail onto the intended recipient without being caught in the email chain for replies. Excel also gets some love from SP1 with improved Solver integration support, which should be handy for those attempting to use equations in Excel.

Look to Microsoft Autoupdate on your Mac starting next week, or visit the Microsoft Mac download center to update manually once it becomes available.

Fact Sheet: U.S.-Poland Bilateral Defense Cooperation

Release Time:
For Immediate Release

The United States and Poland have forged an exceptional bilateral defense partnership, firmly rooted in the enduring NATO alliance.  Poland and the United States work together in the Euro-Atlantic  region and globally  with shared values and shared democratic principles.   In Afghanistan, U.S. and Polish soldiers fight bravely to advance security and stability and deny violent extremists safe haven.  Committed to each other’s defense through NATO, the United States and Poland have undertaken contingency planning, joint exercises and Polish basing upgrades in support of Article 5 commitments under the North-Atlantic Treaty. Strengthening their partnership, the United States and Poland are building on the August 2008 Declaration on Strategic Cooperation through collaboration in military training and modernization, missile defense, information sharing, and defense/industrial research.  Key joint actions include:

Aviation Detachment:  During his visit to Warsaw, President Obama and President Komorowski welcomed the conclusion of a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding, a key step toward the establishment of a U.S. Air Force Aviation Detachment in Poland.  The Aviation Detachment will strengthen joint interoperability through regular training exercise rotations in Poland, largely with U.S. F-16 or C-130 aircraft, beginning in 2013.  F-16s from the California Air National Guard will also participate in the July 2011 SAFE SKIES training exercise with Polish F-16s as part of Poland’s security preparations for the EURO 2012 soccer tournament.

Missile Defense:   President Obama discussed with President Komorowski and Prime Minister Tusk next steps in the European Phased Adaptive Approach (EPAA) to missile defense, including recent progress in implementing Phases I and II of the new missile defense architecture.  The United States welcomes Poland’s May 2011 ratification of our Missile Defense Agreement, and the U.S. European Command and Polish military leaders will jointly inaugurate a series of consultations to take necessary actions to implement this agreement, leading to the deployment of the EPAA’s land-based interceptor site in Poland in 2018.

Preparation for Deployments to Afghanistan: The United States and Poland jointly train before each Polish ISAF deployment (which now totals 2,600), with support from the U.S. Army Europe, Special Operations Command, and the Illinois National Guard.  Members of the Illinois National Guard proudly serve shoulder-to-shoulder with Polish forces in Afghanistan.  The U.S. supports Polish operations with loans of armored vehicles and other combat equipment and services.

Special Operations:  In the wake of the February 2009 signing of the Memorandum of Understanding establishing a strategic partnership between the U.S. and Polish Special Operations commands, the United States continues to assist Poland in becoming a fully interoperable Special Operations Forces partner nation by 2014.

Air Defense Training:  In May 2010, the United States began quarterly rotations of a Patriot battery to Poland.  Four rotations have already been completed and there are plans for seven more.  These rotations and other military cooperation are possible because the United States and Poland negotiated a supplemental Status of Forces Agreement that entered into force in early 2010.

Reciprocal Defense Procurement Agreement:  The United States and Poland have concluded negotiations and will soon sign a Reciprocal Defense Procurement MOU that will facilitate defense cooperation by greatly reducing barriers to trade in defense articles.

In addition to close cooperation within NATO, the United States and Poland continue regular, high-level consultations between our governments.  The State Department and Ministry of Foreign Affairs hold annual Strategic Dialogue and Strategic Cooperation Consultative Group meetings.  The Department of Defense leads annual High Level Defense Group meetings with the Polish Ministry of Defense.  These dialogues span transatlantic, European, and NATO security issues, ranging from Afghanistan to missile defense to non-proliferation and arms control.

Justin Bieber's perfume ad: seduction by a child is wrong

Listen up Bieber. You seem to be under the delusion that teenage girls want to meet you. They don't. They just want to obsess over you

OH MY GIDDY AUNT. The advert for Justin Bieber's perfume. Discuss.

Eduardo, by email

To be fair, Eduardo (and aunt of Eduardo), perfume adverts are not exactly known for that elusive quality we in the business refer to as "the relaxed sphincter factor". This is when something is so unembarrassing that one can relax one's sphincter. Clever that, huh? A really, like, smart linguist must have come up with that one. A cunning one, even. OK, step away, folks, nothing to see here.

Some of us are still recovering from Ewan McGregor's unforgivable plug for Davidoff Somethingorother ("I find myself in an exhilarating journey" ? presumably a journey straight to the bank). Even worse was the Chanel sheckel taken by McGregor's former singing mate, Nicole Kidman. It is a proven medical fact that just the memory of Kidman braying, "I'm a dancer! I love to dance!" still causes the innards of all sentient human beings to curl.

Meanwhile, the contributions to the world of olfactory cinema from Sean John/Diddy/Daddy/Swagg/whatever-his-stupid-name-is-this-week are so extraordinary they require their own genre, as Hitchcock's films do, or those of David Lynch, but in a perhaps less positive way.

Predictably, the Biebmeister's contribution to the artform is in keeping with the tradition. It features Dree "yes, the great granddaughter of" Hemingway (truly, Ernest, all of your efforts to achieve immortal artistic credibility were not in vain). If I can grasp the semiotics and subtextual messages in this nigh-on Buuelian artwork, Justin appears to be suggesting that if you spritz on this offering from the duty free bargain bin he will magically appear in your room, take you into the cover illustration of a 70s prog-rock band's album, reveal he is wearing some very misjudged purple high-top trainers, and depart.

Leaving aside the distracting thought that there is something very wrong about advertising a perfume with the promise of seduction by a child, and then leaving aside the depressing thought that such concerns are a sign of how old I am as I did not have such qualms when I was snogging posters of a barely pubescent Jordan Knight several decades ago, let us focus on the message that Bieber is sending here.

He is making the basic mistake that all celebrities make, namely that it is their fans' dearest wish to meet them. It is understandable that they believe this, and that even their fans believe this, but speaking as one who fell passionately in love with many young men she'd never met when she was between the ages of 13 and 16, I can say with authority that this is not really the case. What teenage and tweenage fans really want is to talk about the object of their desires with fellow fans, obsessively and even fanatically. The object himself is actually irrelevant. He is merely the vessel into which young girls pour all their emotions and desire ? not for the boy himself, exactly ? but for being part of a community, whether it's a school clique or a Justin Bieber (or Jordan Knight) fan club.

So my advice to Bieber is this: if he really wants to sell his whiffy plonk, promise it can freeze time for everyone but those who wear the perfume. Thus, all Bieber fans can talk for hours on the internet with other obsessives and not have to worry about boring things such as going to school and writing a thank-you note to grandma.

I recently made a trip to London and met some interesting people. But I was left wondering one thing: what the bejeezus does the Queen keep in that handbag that she's never without?

Michelle O, by telepathy

Michelle, can I say, just as you were welcomed to London, I welcome you to this page. And before we continue, I'd like to add that, if comparisons must be drawn, contrary to what may have been written in other inferior papers, you were better dressed than Kate Middleton. But I guess that's because I like women to look happy, original and cool and other lady journalists prefer them to look like Cheryl Cole.

Anyway, through the same telepathy that told me you were pondering this question, I can reveal the contents of the Queen's bag: iPhone (Queeny can't go for more than a minute without checking Twitter), box of Smints (for Philip), hand sanitiser (necessity of the job), spare tiara (just in case), photo of William (the rest of them can go to hell) and a fly swatter (in case that dreadful Nicholas Witchell tries to get too close.)

So just the basics, really.

LPO/Jurowski ? review

Royal Festival Hall, London

Once again, in a seemingly endless season straddling the anniversaries of the composer's birth and death, the LPO offered a lifeline to concert-goers suffering Mahler fatigue. Its own uncommonly probing series of Mahler-based concerts ended not with a symphony but, less obviously, with songs.

Not that the two were ever far apart for a composer whose symphonies and songs cross-fertilised each other to an extraordinary degree. We heard eight songs, all from his settings of the Knaben Wunderhorn poems; the first, Mahler's characteristically straight-faced but lively description of St Anthony preaching to the fishes, took us directly into the sumptuous world of the Second Symphony, the scherzo of which uses the same music.

The orchestra was on superb form, especially in the closing Revelge, in which Jurowski seemed able to turn the volume of the martial wind and brass up and down as precisely as with a remote control. But Hanno Mller-Brachmann, a late stand-in as soloist, matched the players for vivid expression all the way. Mller-Brachmann is a rising star in Germany, and with good reason; his sonorous, flexible bass-baritone communicated every single word. Only in Das Irdische Leben, a song about a starving child for whom the promised bread arrives just too late, might less have been more.

The songs were framed with two symphonies, to which Jurowski brought a rather solemn approach. Haydn's No 88 sounded aristocratic and slightly staid. But Brahms's Fourth was a triumph. Opening with a melody that seemed to ride the surface of a huge ocean swell teeming with undercurrents, Jurowski aimed for, and achieved, a performance of colossal proportions. It's not the only way of performing Brahms; it's not even Jurowski's only way of performing Brahms. But in the heady Mahlerian context, it was stunning.

Skype for Linux gets an update after almost 15 months

Skype for Linux download page

Proving how much it cares about those people who use its app on Linux, Skype has released version 2.2 for Linux. Don't run towards the champagne though, as this is still a beta version, and, as its minor revision number implies, isn't the much-awaited big new version that achieves feature parity with its Windows and Mac brethren.

It's only been what, almost 15 months since the last Skype beta for Linux? Well, during this time, Skype's main focus has clearly been improving its Linux app, since the new version fixes the amazing number of 49 bugs. It also brings 23 'improvements', and yet somehow still manages to have a fair share of 'known issues'. Exciting, no?

What is perhaps the most important feature addition here is the support for Skype Access. This lets you easily connect to paid Wi-Fi hotspots across the globe while paying for them with Skype credit. Skype for Linux has also received support for call waiting and holding, as well as easy conference hosting. Audio and video quality have been boosted (hopefully in a way that's going to be noticeable in day-to-day use), and some of the languages have been updated.

'Florence has this whole persona: the big hair, long legs, flowing robes. Here, you wonder if she's hiding behind it'

Sometimes you manage to capture a magical, in-between moment; this is one of those. I took it on 11 February last year at a studio in east London, as part of a portrait shoot for the Guardian's Weekend magazine. Florence [Welch, from Florence and the Machine] came in for three or four hours, and she was fantastic to photograph. She's really comfortable in front of the camera. You get the sense she's pretty comfortable in front of the mirror, too.

She sang all afternoon. Somebody put a Mystery Jets song on the sound-system, and she sang a duet right there in the studio; it was quite moving. It also meant that I really wanted to come at the shoot from a performer's perspective.

My idea was to capture an off-stage moment. I use two cameras, a Linhof plate camera and a digital one, and I mix them up a bit; I think this shot was digital. I was just shooting away, trying to get a good portrait ? then there was an extended silence. Florence turned away from me, and I just caught the moment.

Colours are really important, especially when I'm shooting digital: they're a way to make it look more like film. The colours here are great; Florence's stylist chose that top quite early on in the shoot, and it just happened to go really well with a gold curtain I had lying around. What I really love about this picture is that it draws you in. It's not the kind of image you'd expect to see of Florence; you don't quite know what's going on in her head. She has this whole persona: the big red hair, the long legs, the flowing robes. In this picture, you wonder whether she's hiding behind that.

The best portrait photography lets the subject's personality shine through. It can be pretty pressured ? you often don't have very long, and your subject has been photographed countless times before. You've really got to be prepared. Most importantly, you have to express something about them that's true. If there's no truth in an image, it's stillborn.

Lead, Prisons, and Crack: Why Violent Crime is Down

Crime guru James Q. Wilson surveys the evidence for why violent crime rates have dropped so dramatically over the past two decades. The state of the economy, he says, seems to have little to do with it:

One obvious answer is that many more people are in prison than in the past. Experts differ on the size of the effect, but I think that William Spelman and Steven Levitt have it about right in believing that greater incarceration can explain about one-quarter or more of the crime decline.

....There may also be a medical reason for the decline in crime. For decades, doctors have known that children with lots of lead in their blood are much more likely to be aggressive, violent and delinquent. In 1974, the Environmental Protection Agency required oil companies to stop putting lead in gasoline....A 2007 study by the economist Jessica Wolpaw Reyes contended that the reduction in gasoline lead produced more than half of the decline in violent crime during the 1990s in the U.S. and might bring about greater declines in the future.

....Another shift that has probably helped to bring down crime is the decrease in heavy cocaine use in many states....Drug use among blacks has changed even more dramatically than it has among the population as a whole....Among 13,000 people arrested in Manhattan between 1987 and 1997, a disproportionate number of whom were black, those born between 1948 and 1969 were heavily involved with crack cocaine, but those born after 1969 used very little crack and instead smoked marijuana.

So if I can put words into Wilson's mouth, the decline in crime is perhaps one-quarter due to increased incarceration, one-quarter due to reduced cocaine use, and one half due to reductions in blood lead levels in children. Better policing might be part of it too, though the evidence is spotty. Oddly, though, Wilson's own summary is different: "At the deepest level, many of these shifts, taken together, suggest that crime in the United States is falling [...] because of a big improvement in the culture." Aside from the reductions in cocaine and crack use, however, none of this sounds all that cultural to me. It sounds like we cleaned up the environment and built a lot of new prisons. It's hard to see an awful lot of room for cultural explanations here.

Sandie Shaw: This much I know

The singer, 64, on Buddhism, getting older and her lovely feet

I hated every minute of my early career. I was incredibly anxious and there was so much responsibility because everyone was dependent on me for a living and I was so young. I just wanted to go home.

I'm really interested in how people tick. I think that's why I trained as a therapist. Ever since I was 16, people have only wanted to talk about me. I can't tell you how boring it gets. I want to ask others about themselves.

I've practised Buddhism for 35 years. It's practical and does what it says on the can. I don't have to wait until I die to find out if I'm going to heaven because it's about the here and now. That's important to me.

I'd hate to be a man. I feel sorry for them, being so career driven. In the music industry there's so many of them, whereas as a woman you can make waves.

My feet are lovely ? I just sit and look at them. I had an operation recently because I had bunions and my toes were too long. I wanted beautiful feet because I like having my shoes off so much. I still sing barefoot.

I love getting older, though people still treat me like the baby. I'm on tour with Jools Holland and his big band at the moment ? they're all half my age, but the girls act like my aunties and the men like my big brothers.

I cry when I say things I really believe in. I cry at board meetings and the men at the table get quite taken aback, I have to ask them to take no notice.

I feel such affection for my audience, they're part of my life story. I like the youngsters that come along. They don't have any barriers about where music comes from. They just put it in their iPod and shuffle it.

I ignore myself when I feel scared. I pretend I'm not scared and do it anyway.

I'm associated with the 60s, but I'm actually stuck in the 50s. I'm into post-war austerity. I really like doing jigsaws and I collect paper bags. Give me an apple, a carrot and some paprika and I'll make you a meal.

My dad's support was so important. I was his only child, and a daughter, but it didn't bother him. He'd take me to his garage and I helped him make a car. He could have made me help mum with the washing up, but I wanted to be with him.

When I was young there was no one who had anything I wanted to know and I left school as quickly as possible. Now I like being taught and directed, I just like to choose my teachers myself.

I practise dying when I have operations. I think, "This is the moment I'm going to die" when I have the anaesthetic, then it's so nice when I wake up.

I try to like everyone because that stops me being anxious about myself. I'm really shy and I find that helps.

My relationship with my first husband made me grow. My relationship with my second gave me confidence. My relationship with my present husband has allowed me to really fill my own space. Don't tell him though, it'll go to his head.

Happy New Year from all of us here at Pandora

Hey, it's Tim from Pandora -

I'm writing to wish you a very Happy New Year from all of us here at Pandora! And what a year it was...

First, a heartfelt thanks to all of you for continuing to be such engaged listeners and such wonderful evangelists. In 2010 we doubled our audience to over 75 million people! And that was mostly thanks to continued word of mouth. For that we are deeply appreciative.

As always, interacting with listeners continues to be our greatest joy, and greatest source of feedback. You now send us over 25,000 emails every month. What an incredible fountain of information, constructive feedback, and validation that continues to be... and those thumbs! In 2010 alone, you thumbed over 3 billion songs (mostly thumbs-up... phew!).

Getting your stations right continues to be our obsession - and a work in progress. It's a (wonderfully) hard problem and something we continue to work on every day. Your feedback is invaluable to that effort.

I hope you've checked out one of the many new connected devices that now support Pandora. We're trying our best to make Pandora available everywhere you might want to use it. And that includes cars. 2011 will bring more options than ever to listen to Pandora on the road, beyond just plugging your smartphone into an auxiliary jack. Ford, GM, Mercedes-Benz, Mini and Toyota have all announced Pandora integration into their dashboards. There's no way to describe what it's like to have personalized radio in the car. You just have to try it.

Last, but not least, a shout-out to all the great new music from working artists everywhere. Keep your submissions coming. We're furiously adding music so listeners can keep discovering. The Music Genome Project surpassed 850,000 songs and is now rapidly becoming a more international collection.

So much more to say... but we've got the whole year ahead of us to talk :).

Please stay in touch, keep listening and I look forward to the music we're all going to enjoy in 2011.

As always, your feedback is most welcome.

Grooveshark gets kicked out of the Android Market

Grooveshark logoGoogle has removed Grooveshark from the Android Market. The move, which comes many months after Apple kicked the music app from its App Store, has to do with (what else?) accusations from several top music labels that Grooveshark violates copyright law.

It's unclear whether Google plans to also remotely remove the app from Android smartphones on which it's already been installed, something that Google has the power to do but has only in the past used to get rid of malware-ridden apps.

In response to questions regarding Grooveshark's removal from the Android Market, a Google spokesperson only had this to say: "We remove apps from Android Market that violate our terms of service." The spokesperson did not mention what violations Grooveshark has committed in relation to the Market's terms of service. Google has also, understandably, not said anything about this happening in response to pressure from the music industry -- yet what else could have triggered this removal?

In an interesting coincidence, Google is set to outline its anti-piracy efforts before the House of Representatives' Judiciary committee today. Google has been accused numerous times that it profits from piracy by allowing 'pirate' sites to post Google ads. The company is expected to deny this as well as issue a tougher stance on piracy at today's hearing.

As for Grooveshark, it looks like it's quickly running out of mobile app stores on which it's allowed to exist. Do consider however that you'll probably still be able to get the Android app from Grooveshark directly -- since (unless you have an AT&T Android device) Android does allow you to install apps that don't come from the Market.
